A Conversation with Police Chief Paul Reynolds

The ROA wants to give valuable and meaningful information to our members. Stone Harbor Police Chief Paul Reynolds was enthusiastic in accepting an invitation to meet with the Trustees, so that he could debrief us on some important safety matters. He attended the December 10, 2011 ROA Trustee meeting. Chief Reynolds summarized the services that are provided by the Police Department.

- Residential and commercial property checks.
- Nightly heater light property checks.
- Active database of local emergency contact information.
- Knox Box system control for properties with alarm systems.
- Bicycle registration database.
- Senior call-in program to check the well being of seniors who reside alone.

If you are interested in having your property checked, you can complete a “Request for Property Check” form or contact the Stone Harbor Police Department at 609-368-2111. The bicycle registration form is available at the department and also online at www.stone-harbor.nj.us/police.asp.

Chief Reynolds talked about ways to protect your residence while you are away.

- Ensure that all locks for your doors and windows are in good working order.
- Use a timer for your lights.
- Place a hold on newspapers and mail delivery.
- Close drapes or blinds so that electronic equipment isn’t visible.
- If possible, have someone you trust check your residence while you are away.
- Provide the Police department with a local emergency contact who can be reached in your absence.

The Chief gave examples of burglary prevention while you are home. Many cases involve a criminal going from house to house looking for unlocked doors or windows.

- Keep all doors and windows locked. This includes your garage, where people have entered in order to steal beer or take things out of cars.
- Lock car doors.
- Never allow someone you don’t know into your home. If someone needs assistance, offer to call the Police for them while they wait outside.
- Keep valuable items out of sight of passers-by.
- Keep a list of your valuables, including serial numbers and unique characteristics.
- Report anything suspicious.

The good news is that site work will begin on the vacant lot at 96th Street and 3rd Avenue in December. (The associated photograph shows a bulldozer on the property.) Dr. Sprandio said that building will begin in February as the first phase of his project. The second phase will be the incorporation of the group of stores in the area of Polly's. He will go before the Zoning Board in March 2012 with plans for this area. The third phase of his project will include the site of the old Henny's restaurant.

Avalon Gets Environmental Award

The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce presented Avalon with the 19th annual Environmental Conservation Award on Oct. 20 for many innovative initiatives enacted over the past 12 months.

“Avalon is honored to receive this prestigious award from the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce,” Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi said in accepting the award on behalf of the borough during the chamber’s annual dinner meeting. “In Avalon, proactive environmental initiatives are a way of life. I want to thank the Avalon Environmental Commission, Avalon Green Team, the Avalon Garden Club and other community volunteers and organizations who support the borough’s continued environmental leadership.”
In the past year, the Green Team initiated a major water conservation experiment on three traffic islands on Dune Drive and also held a very successful Green Fair on Oct. 8 that attracted more than 1,500 people. The team also began the process of exploring energy alternatives, including the potential for a solar-energy project involving the borough and Avalon Elementary School.

The Environmental Commission has been instrumental with major progress involving the borough’s Dune Vegetation Management Plan, along with environmental improvements planned for Armacost Park. The Avalon Garden Club continued its major beautification efforts in the community.

This past summer, Avalon installed New Jersey’s first municipal electric-vehicle charging station in front of the Avalon Public Safety Complex on Dune Drive. The borough also installed protective turtle fencing along the north and south sides of Avalon Boulevard.
“We appreciate this recognition from the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce,” said Jim Collins, chairman of Avalon’s all-volunteer Green Team. “Thanks to the leadership of mayor and council, we are able to consider and implement many new environmental initiatives in the borough. Avalon has a deep and vested interest in exploring new environmental initiatives that conserve resources and save money.”

2011 Festival of the Trees

Join us at the Whitebrier, 260 20th Street, on Wednesday, November 23 and Friday, November 25 for the Festival of the Trees. The 4 foot tall trees and wreaths were donated by the 7MBCA and decorated by the town’s business owners with any theme of their choice. On Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m., there will be an auction kickoff party with cocktails, music and free hors d’oeuvres. Bidding on the trees will begin at 5 p.m. If you are worried about what to do with the little ones, the Whitebrier has that all taken care of. In the Mermaid Lounge on the Big Screen, "Home Alone" will be playing, also starting at 5 p.m. On Friday, the Whitebrier will open at 3 p.m., prior to the Christmas tree lighting, and the cocktail party and the bidding will continue. Once again, if you need something to occupy the kids, "Elf "will be playing on the big screen in the Mermaid Lounge starting at 3 p.m. The bidding on the trees will close on Friday night at 9 p.m. Winners will be notified on Saturday. The proceeds from the event go to funding all of the events and activities we have planned for families on Festive Friday. Join us on November 25 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., where we will have everything from face painters and bounce houses to a caricature artist and an ice sculpture, throughout the business district.

Kick Off the Holidays Island Style in Stone Harbor

The holiday season is quickly approaching and if you aren’t quite feeling it yet, a visit to Stone Harbor over Thanksgiving weekend is sure to do the trick. There is no reason to fight the crowds and stand in line at the mall. Shop right here in town! You can even get a head start on your wrapping if you stop by Diller & Fisher over the weekend. They will do it for you!

There will be loads of activities and entertainment all day and into the night on Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26. There will be costumed characters strolling the business district, available for photos. Your children will have a blast creating sand art, getting their faces painted and writing letters to Santa while you enjoy listening to Christmas carolers strolling through town. Holiday refreshments will be served, including donuts and hot chocolate.

If you don’t yet have your photo for your Christmas card, bring your camera to the Stone Harbor lifeguard boat. Also, throughout the weekend, Stone Harbor will be draped in holiday music as participating shops depict favorite Christmas carols in their windows. Visitors are invited to take a stroll through town to enjoy the displays and see if they can “name that holiday tune!”

On Friday, there will be entertainment throughout the day on the 96th Street stage. From 9-11 a.m., stop by Jack’s Shack on Third Avenue and decorate some Christmas cookies. At 11 a.m., head over to the new Stone Harbor Book Shop (located in the mall), for story time with Santa himself. Even Fido gets a chance to get in on the action this holiday! Our annual pet parade starts at 1 p.m. and runs the 200 & 300 blocks of 96th Street. Once the parade is over, your pet will have a chance to tell Santa all of his Christmas wishes! Santa will be at Paw Prints from 2-4 p.m. for pet pictures.

But the fun doesn’t end there! On Friday, the business district will host Hospitality Night from 6-9. Most of the stores in town will be open for you to visit and enjoy refreshments while you shop. Don’t miss the tree lighting at 7, followed by a performance from the Mummers String Band.

Saturday brings another round of shopping and fun. Start off your day with a good breakfast for a great cause: At 9 a.m., the Women’s Civic Club will host a Toys for Tots continental breakfast. Bring an unwrapped toy that will go to a needy child this Christmas and enjoy a complimentary breakfast with visits from various Christmas characters. After some shopping and a chance to work up your appetite again, Stone Harbor Bar & Grill will be hosting lunch with Santa from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There are many stories that span generations to complement the holiday season. Join Santa at Stone Harbor Book Shop at 10 a.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. for story time. At 11 a.m., try your hand at making ornaments at Just Bead It, located at 9514 Third Ave. Then, at noon, Seashore Ace will host a Weber Grill Cooking Demonstration, followed by photos with Santa at the firehouse from 3-5 p.m. 
Members of Our Saviour Lutheran Church will be caroling under the clock from 6-6:30 p.m., leading up the annual Christmas Parade. Once the parade has concluded, warm up and visit with Santa at Coffee Talk.

Things are Getting Festive in Avalon!

Thanksgiving is a time for family and a chance to give thanks for all of the blessings in your life. However, let’s not forget that it’s also the time to start (if you haven’t already) your holiday shopping! The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally a major shopping day. This year, instead of standing in line at the mall, why not shop locally? Avalon has a long list of incredible stores to shop in and, with our annual Festive Friday event, we will help your children have fun, too!

Hosted by the 7 Mile Business Community Association and the Borough of Avalon, Festive Friday has more than 40 free holiday activities for children of all ages to enjoy. This is the fourth year for the event, and each year it gets bigger and better! Join us for live entertainment throughout the business district from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The main attraction for this year’s event will be an ice-skating rink, located on the grass median on Dune Drive between 19th and 20th streets. We can’t think of a better way to get into the holiday spirit, than to spend a little time out on the ice. Now you can do that right here in Avalon. Adults and children of all ages are invited to come and skate while you listen to holiday music. Skates will be available for you to use.

Other highlights of the day include a caricature artist hosted by Josh and Kim Miller at Ocean Galleries, 297 22nd St. Once again, Bill Albrecht welcomes families for a free game of miniature golf at Avalon Mini Golf, located at 2438 Dune Drive. And don’t forget man’s best friend! Bring your dogs to the Princeton Bar and Grill, 21st and Dune Drive, from noon to 2 p.m. to have their photo taken with Santa Claus.

In addition, there will be bounce houses, located at the Avalon Rescue Squad building, Coldwell Banker and Circle Pizza, and face painters, balloon clowns, holiday crafts and letters-to-Santa stations throughout the business district. Make sure you bring your camera! This year, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Cinderella, Mrs. Claus and other holiday favorites will be out and about, ready to pose for pictures. If you need a snack along the way, grab some hot chocolate, s’mores, popcorn or cotton candy. You can also stop by The Preppy Palm, where Rose is turning the store into a lounge (with football games on, of course) for anyone who needs to take a break from the action!

Beginning at 4 p.m., the entertainment moves to the 21st Street circle. From 4-7 p.m. there will be live entertainment. Children can enjoy a magic show and a stilt walker, and get their faces painted while the adults listen to live music. The Cumberland County College Wind Symphony will be playing for the hour leading up to the tree lighting and children from Stone Harbor and Avalon’s Elementary Schools will be singing after the tree lighting.

Following the day’s events, Santa Claus will come to town for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Beginning at 5 p.m., he will ride aboard a fire engine to 21st Street and Dune Drive, where he will join President of Avalon Borough Council Nancy Hudanich to light Avalon’s tree. We hope you have made the nice list because once the tree is lit, everyone is invited to pose for pictures with Santa and let him know what you would like to find under the tree this year.

Festive Friday is a terrific event to help get you feeling, well, festive! Why not spend the day shopping for unique gifts, without the stress! Join us for a day of great shopping and fun for the whole family to enjoy.

Stone Harbor Harvest Festival Activities Re-Scheduled For Sunday!

DUE TO THE WEATHER FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29 - WE ARE POSTPONING OUR HARVEST FESTIVAL UNTIL SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30 - SAME TIME - SAME GREAT FUN!!!!!!! HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE.……. Severe high tides are expected along with flooding on Saturday, so events will be held on Sunday 11am - 4pm.

Stone Harbor will hold their first Harvest Festival on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30TH from 11 AM to 4 PM. The highlight of the event will be hayrides along the beach. Festival goers can pick-up the hayride in front the Stone Harbor Firehouse at 96th Street and 2nd Avenue and travel down 96th Street to the beach, ride along the beachfront and return to the Firehouse.

Trick or Treating in the downtown will be held during the day for all children wearing Halloween costumes. And at 2 PM, there will be a Pet Costume Contest in front of Paw Prints, 281 96th Street, prizes will be awarded. At 3 PM, there will be a costume parade for all children down 96th Street.

Throughout the day on 96th Street pumpkin painting and Halloween Arts and Crafts will be happening along with a Farmers Market, Artisans and a Halloween Magic Show. At the all-new Stone Harbor Book Shop there will be children's reading of The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything at 11AM and 1PM, Bats at the Beach at 3PM and Excerpts from Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark at 5PM.

Decorated Scarecrows by Stone Harbor merchants and organizations will be on display along 96th Street. Come vote for your favorite scarecrow.

The Harbor Haunted Hoot featuring entertainment and food specials from Carney's, Fred's and the Stone Harbor Bar and Grill will take place throughout the weekend.

Philadelphia Flyers to Join the Fun at Barbecue & Blues Festival in Stone Harbor

Wednesday, August 3rd - from 4 PM to 9PM

 Stone Harbor, NJ – Stone Harbor plays host to the 2nd Barbecue and Blues Night – Stone Harbor Style on Wednesday, August 3rd. Philadelphia Flyers Ian Laperiere and Athletic Trainer Jim McCrossin along with other guests from the Flyers organization will be in attendance to make a check presentation to the American Legion from funds raised at the recent Trial on the Isle held in Stone Harbor. The event will take place from 4 PM to 9PM at the Recreation Fields on 80th Street.  Music will be provided by the Kalob Griffin Band.

A barbecue dinner consisting of ribs, chicken and sides will be catered by Rode’s Famous Barbecue. You can eat in under the tent and enjoy the festivities or take out is available.

In addition to the food which will be highlighted, the evening is a partnership among many community organizations in Stone Harbor and is sponsored by The American Legion Post 331, American Legion Auxiliary, Borough of Stone Harbor, Realty Owners Association of Stone Harbor, Stone Harbor Chamber, Stone Harbor Fire Department, Stone Harbor Lions Club, Stone Harbor Seniors, Nuns Beach Surf Contest, and the Women's Civic Club. Each of these groups will be providing various forms of entertainment for the enjoyment of the attendees. The Lions Club is planning a dunk tank with many local celebrities participating. There will be a moon bounce for kids as well as facepainting, sand art and other activities for children.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for children 12 and under. Adult tickets the day of are $25. A ticket is required for admittance to the food tent. One of the most popular, beloved, and collected artists of the past three decades,

Howard Behrens returns to Ocean Galleries bringing a new series of gorgeous paintings. The talented artist uses only a palette-knife for its boldness and control, painting with great dramatic intensity and focus. His paintings, distinctively textured and brilliantly illuminated land and seascapes, evoke memories of romantic interludes in exotic settings, often encompassing familiar architecture and promenades.  Diagnosed with Parkinson’s a few years back, the renowned artist feared it might limit his painting abilities. Behrens recently explained, “Last May, as my Parkinson's Disease progressed, I realized that I truly am in the twilight of my long career. Giving in to a strong inclination and urgent inspiration, I started painting the magic and romance of spectacular sunsets in some of my favorite places in the world. My goal at this, my last gallery show, is to showcase what the twilight years mean to me. I think that the new direction in my art is very powerful, and it evokes enormous emotion in me as I begin to say farewell to so many friends and collectors, especially here at Ocean Galleries.” Like the extraordinary artist, this very special showing promises to be extremely memorable.

All of the art exhibitions are open to the public throughout the respective show dates. Stone Harbor Announces  Independence Day Celebration

This July 4, 2011, Stone Harbor invites residents and visitors to declare their independence from boredom and join in a full day of fun activities at the 81st Street Recreation Field and beach in Stone Harbor, NJ. The day’s events kick off with Opening Ceremonies at 9:50 a.m. in the soccer field.

Sand Sculpture Contest

Bring your shovels and join in the Sand Sculpture contest on the beach at 83rd Street. Registration takes place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Contestants can begin working on their creations and judging takes place at 11:30 a.m. Prizes and trophies go to the top three sculptures in each of the following age groups: 2–8 years, 9–15 years, 16 years and up, and family or group entries.

Hoys 5 & 10 Candy Scramble

 Even the strongest sweet tooth will be satisfied during this fun-filled race to collect wrapped candy strewn all about the soccer field. The event, limited to children ages six and under, begins at 10 a.m. and requires no registration.

Foot Races

 Stick around, because immediately following the Candy Scramble the Fourth of July footraces will commence. Racers will be divided into males and females in an all-out race for the finish line. No registration is necessary to participate, and prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category.

Phillies Home Run Derby

 Calling all heavy-hitters: head to the baseball field and register for the Phillies Home Run Derby between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., it’s time to step up to the plate and show us what you’ve got. Prizes will be awarded to the boy and girl with the most home runs in the following age groups: 7–9 years, 10–12 years and 13–15 years.

Slow Bike Races

Back at the soccer field, Stone Harbor’s Slow Bike Races are a challenge of a different sort. Starting immediately after the foot races, the object of the Slow Bike Race is to ride the provided bike through the fixed course in the slowest amount of time – without any part of your body touching the ground. Sound easy? It’s harder than you think. Prizes and trophies will go to the slowest three finishers in this topsy-turvy event.

Decorated Bike Contest

 Dress up your bike, scooter or baby stroller for a chance to score a trophy for best decorated, most colorful or most original design. Registration, limited to those 18 years and under takes place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the 80th Street and Second Avenue parking lot. The decorated bike parade begins at 11:45 a.m.

Decorated Lifeguard Stand

 Even the lifeguards are getting into the patriotic spirit. Many of the lifeguard stands will be decorated and the guards will be competing for the best decorated stand. At 12 noon, the guards will lead beach goers in a patriotic sing-a-long.

Fireworks and Concert 

When the sun goes down the excitement turns up. Bring your beach chairs and blankets to the soccer field and enjoy a live concert by BLT at 7 PM followed by an All-American fireworks display at 9:30 PM sponsored by the Stone Harbor Fire Department. There's no better way--or place-- to celebrate your Independence Day. In the event of rain, all competitions will take place the following day, on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. The fireworks rain date is also Tuesday, July 5, 2011.

Zookeepers Help Animals Beat the Heat

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE--In this extreme heat, people aren't the only ones trying to cope. Workers at the Cape May County Zoo are doing their best to keep the animals comfortable

The fans are blowing, the sprinklers are spraying, and workers at the Cape May County Zoo are doing all they can to help keep the animals cool.

"We take all the necessary precautions to make sure our animals here are comfortable," said Lenora Boninfante, the communications director for the county.

"We're making ice bottles, making even ice cubes that we'll put in some of the areas," said Janeen Moore, one of the keepers at the zoo. Zoo officials say in these types of temperatures, they need to pay more attention the animals and their needs, especially the ones that don't come from warm climates, like the snow leopards and the snowy owl. Even the bald eagles are feeling the heat. "When they have their beaks open and they're panting a little bit, they're just cooling off their body temperatures," explained Moore, " because they don't sweat."

A big factor in keeping cool is staying in shady areas, something there's no shortage of at the zoo, helping both the animals and visitors beat the heat. "It does feel good," said visitor Christina Paciolla, strolling through the park, "there's a nice breeze."

While zookeepers do their best to make sure all the animals are OK in this weather, there are some they don't have to worry about too much, mainly those in the African Savannah exhibit, which are actually accustomed to dealing with these temperatures. "Our zebras are there and they enjoy the heat," explained Boninfante, "our giraffes, beautiful giraffes, they are there and they do enjoy the heat."

So whether you enjoy the heat or not, the free admission to the zoo does make it one cool trip.

Officials remind everyone to be sure to keep their pets safe and comfortable, too.
In these extreme temperatures, it's very important to make sure they are hydrated and have access to cool shelter.

Turtles Crossing-Drive Carefully!

Why does the turtle cross the road? To get to the other side of course! Female diamondback terrapins looking for alternative nesting grounds cross SH Blvd. and the roads on the island. When on SH Blvd, please watch your speed, and allow plenty of distance between cars in case a turtle stop is necessary. The Wetlands Institute has had a Terrapin Rescue project since 1989.
